Kristen and Cal, enjoying donuts at Yates Cider Mill
Hi, my name is Kristen Woudstra. I’ve always known I wanted to teach and work with women and their families, but I didn’t know in what capacity until I was pregnant with my daughter Sydney. During the course of my pregnancy, I became fascinated with all things birth related! I read every book I could get my hands on, and began to learn about doulas. In 2006, soon after my daughter was born, I began training as a birth doula. I’ve now completed my training and have certified through DONA since 2009. I’ve also trained as a postpartum doula.
In October 2010 I sat for the Lamaze exam to become a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator.
In September of 2010 I became a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician, and in November 2010 I started a new job as a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor in Macomb County. I find that these two new specialties complement my work as a doula and childbirth educator well.
The birth of my son Caldwell in the summer of 2009 was great learning experience! I faced the enormous challenge of having my baby at home, without the pitocin and pain medications I had with my daughter. I had a wonderful team of midwives and a doula and I did it! I had an amazing birth right in my living room, and I had fun! It was extremely hard work but so very rewarding.
I love being able to provide women and their families with evidence-based information and non-judgmental emotional support during the childbearing year. Educating and empowering women during this transformative time in their lives is a passion of mine. I am so grateful to every family that has invited me into their home. I look forward to nurturing and supporting your family!
